Antalya Shopping Guide: What to Buy and How to Bargain
Shopping in Antalya is an experience of extremes. On one hand, you have massive, ultra-modern shopping malls like TerraCity and MarkAntalya featuring global brands. On the other hand, you have chaotic, vibrant street bazaars filled with spices, leather, and souvenirs.
If you are visiting from Europe or North America, the street bazaars can feel intimidating. The shopkeepers are assertive, prices are rarely displayed, and bargaining is expected.
Here is our ultimate guide on what to buy, where to buy it, and how to master the art of the Turkish bargain.
1. What to Buy in Antalya
- Turkish Delight (Lokum) & Spices: Do not buy pre-packaged Turkish Delight in cardboard boxes from supermarkets. Go to a dedicated spice bazaar where they cut it fresh from massive rolls. It tastes entirely different. The same goes for spices like sumac and apple tea.
- Textiles and Leather: Turkey is one of the world's leading textile producers. You will find incredible deals on high-quality Turkish cotton towels (peshtemal), bed linen, and custom-fitted leather jackets.
- Ceramics and Carpets: Beautiful, hand-painted bowls featuring Ottoman and Hittite motifs make perfect souvenirs. If you are buying a Turkish carpet, do your research beforehand, as prices can range from a few hundred to tens of thousands of Euros.
- The "Replika" Market: It is an open secret that Turkish bazaars are filled with high-quality "replicas" (fakes) of designer bags, shoes, and clothing. While selling them is technically illegal, it is a massive part of the tourist shopping culture.
2. The Golden Rules of Bargaining
Bargaining is a game, a cultural exchange, and a completely normal part of Turkish life. However, there are rules.
Rule 1: Know WHERE to bargain. You cannot bargain in modern shopping malls, grocery stores (like Migros), or any shop where items have a printed barcode or official price tag. Bargaining is strictly for the street bazaars, leather shops, and independent tourist stalls.
Rule 2: Don't show too much enthusiasm. If a shopkeeper sees you desperately in love with a specific lamp or handbag, you instantly lose your negotiating power. Look at the item casually.
Rule 3: The First Price is a Starting Point. When you ask "How much?", the shopkeeper will usually give you a highly inflated price (sometimes double what they actually expect to get). Your counter-offer should be around 40-50% of their initial price. Expect them to look shocked. You will then meet somewhere in the middle.
Rule 4: The Tea Trap (It's Not a Trap!) If you are negotiating for a high-ticket item like leather or a carpet, the shopkeeper will likely offer you Turkish tea (çay). Drinking the tea does not mean you have to buy the item. It is simply Turkish hospitality. Enjoy the tea, have a chat, and if the price still isn't right, you can politely decline and leave.
Rule 5: The "Walk Away" Technique This is the most powerful tool in your arsenal. If you cannot agree on a fair price, say "Thank you" and slowly start walking out of the shop. 90% of the time, the shopkeeper will call you back with their "absolute final" (and much lower) price.
